We made it to and from Mexico … and with only a few hiccups and a whole lot of adventure.

Going through security has always been a breeze; however, on our way to Mexico that wasn’t the case. My bag with all the medical supplies got stopped because I carry sterile water to clean out my catheter and they had to run tests on it. Next thing we know my dad is getting a pat down and they’ve called the “bomb specialist” – who shows up with two other security. The bomb specialist was an incredibly intimidating woman who worked eight years in the army as an explosive ordinance specialist, 18 years working for the FBI, and is now the lead of bomb security at the Seatac airport. They quickly realized we weren’t carrying a bomb … it really was just sterile water. Although it was a hassle to be stopped everyone was friendly and I appreciate the people doing their jobs to keep us safe.

Eight hours later we landed in the Cancun airport. After thinking Marty missed his flight and being way too stressed out and panicked I saw him walking towards me in the airport. Phew. We were finally on vacation.

I have not a single complaint about Mexico. Well, that’s not exactly true … the bugs completely put me over the edge. Every night at 6 we covered ourselves in Off. Thank goodness the few bites I got were on my legs so I couldn’t feel them itch – perks of a spinal cord injury. Also, there were locust the size of birds. Anybody who knows me can probably see me cringe as I went past them.

Aside from the bugs, Mexico was wonderful and relaxing. The drinks and food were delicious, the service was superb, the sun and heat warmed my bones, I was with my favorite people, and the view wasn’t so bad.

By the end of the trip it felt like everyone at the resort knew Marty’s and my story, I worked out everyday in the gym, swam in the pool and ocean, played ping pong, went into downtown Playa Del Carmen, and have a ton of new stories and memories I’ll never forget.

Time to start planning my next trip … get ready New York and Baltimore!
